The Liberal Democrats launch their campaign for the Euro elections in the South West tomorrow [Tuesday 7 May] in Bristol but local Euro candidate Martin Horwood couldn't wait to get started.
He joined with new Lib Dem parliamentary candidate for Cheltenham Max Wilkinson to get campaigners knocking on doors in the town today following their party's spectacular success in the local elections last week.
In Gloucestershire the Lib Dems made gains in Tewkesbury District on Thursday and made national headlines by seizing control of the former true blue Tory heartland of the Cotswolds. Although Cheltenham wasn't voting on Thursday, the Liberal Democrats increased their share of the seats on Cheltenham Borough Council to 32 out of 40 in the elections 12 months ago. Across the South West, the Lib Dems now control seven councils outright and are the leading party in the adminsitration of two more - by far the strongest party of those clearly committed to oppose Brexit.
Max Wilkinson, the Lib Dem parliamentary candidate for Cheltenham, said: "It's great to see a Cheltenham name on the ballot paper in these European elections. Martin was a hardworking MP for us, a campaigner against climate change and an outspoken opponent of Brexit. He'll do a terrific job for us in the European Parliament."
Martin Horwood, former Lib Dem MP for Cheltenham and now a candidate for the European parliament in the South West, said they had to build on this success: "The local elections have given us a fantastic head start for the Euro elections. We need to take that momentum straight into this vital European election campaign."
He strongly backed his party's 'Stop Brexit' message: "We want to Stop Brexit and we want a People's Vote. Whether it's Theresa May's deal on the ballot paper or Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn's deal, we want to give Remain voters the chance to vote Remain and people who voted Leave three years ago the chance to say; 'you know what, this isn't the Brexit I voted for. I'd rather we stayed in after all."
"The local results make it crystal clear: in Cheltenham, across Gloucestershire and all over the South West of England, the Lib Dems are the party to vote for now if you want to Stop Brexit."
