“Alex Chalk has had so many positions on Brexit that it’s hard to keep up, but now we know exactly where he stands - right behind Boris Johnson’s disastrous plans to hobble our democracy and inflict a damaging no deal Brexit.”
That was the reaction from Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Cheltenham, Max Wilkinson, after Alex Chalk’s admission on today's BBC Radio Gloucestershire breakfast show that he will vote with the government on key Brexit divisions this week.
“Less than a week ago Mr Chalk stood in front of crowds outside his office and said he was against a no deal Brexit and the shutdown of parliament.
“Only a few weeks ago he spoke against a no deal Brexit at an official People’s Vote campaign rally at Cheltenham Town Hall - local people told me they were impressed and hopeful his position might change.
“But today he has admitted on BBC Gloucestershire that he won’t vote to stop the shutdown of parliament or a no deal Brexit and instead he’ll obey the Conservative whip - again.
“It’s all very confusing for Cheltenham people, but it’s hard escape the suspicion that this is all part of an elaborate act of deception against the voters.”
