Open Letter: One crossed red line too many

Dear Alex,

Honesty and integrity are important principles in politics. Those who seek public office must be willing to back our words with actions.

That is why I feel compelled to remind you of your words in September 2019:

“If there is a scintilla of a suggestion that the British government would act unlawfully, forget it, game over. That is a really important red line for me.”

These comments related to your red line for resignation from the Government and were made at a public meeting in Pittville Park. The meeting was reported by Gloucestershire Live.

The Metropolitan Police has so far issued fines to more than 50 people working in Government, including Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak, for breaking lockdown laws. This happened on Government property.

In light of this latest breach of your personal red line, will you now resign from the Government, as you promised in 2019?

Despite your previous failure to resign when your red line was crossed, there is still time to do the right thing and prove that you are willing to back your words with actions.

Yours sincerely
The undersigned
