Cheltenham MP Max Wilkinson has launched a new push to support bereaved parents seeking answers from social media giants.

His Jools’ Law Bill backs the work being done by Cheltenham resident Ellen Roome, whose son Jools Sweeney tragically took his own life aged just 14.

Max’s Bill would give parents automatic access to their deceased children’s social media accounts – a key request from Ellen and other parents in the Bereaved Families for Online Safety group. Parents currently face out-of-date regulations and other barriers when they seek access to their deceased children’s social media accounts.

Ellen’s son Jools tragically took his own life in 2022.

In her search for answers, Ellen found she was blocked from accessing her son’s accounts by the social media giants. She has since campaigned for a change in the law to give parents this right if their child has died, as well as for other action to give children protection on social media.
